Ed's Priorities as YOUR next Commissioner:

1. Sound Infrastructure; making sure our highway department, planning commission and storm water management have the resources and staff they need to maintain our Roads and drainage. Work with both departments and county council to address what challenges they face now and in future planning well ahead of the annual budget talks.

2. Public Safety; it’s my passion, first and foremost our Police and Fire Services play a vital role in keeping our communities safe and our Police and Fire and Volunteer Fire Services are some of the finest. I would like to keep productive lines of communication between all Public Safety departments on a regular basis. This type of collaboration would benefit future planning and funding solutions ensure that these Departments have what they need to continue to keep our communities safe.

3. Responsible Growth; Growth is good but it must be done responsibly. I can remember back in the early 2000s when home building was exploding everywhere and especially in the rule parts of the county. Flooding and draining became an issue everywhere and regardless of what entity was responsible it always fell back on the county. The county couldn’t keep pace with the growth and it took several years for the county to catch up.

We created a Storm water management department, and along with the highway department have done a great job and drainage in rule areas seem to be working better. I know our highway department will need more resources to repair and manage roads and bridges with the increased traffic that growth attracts. Working with all these County Departments that growth directly affects the most. We need to develop a comprehensive replacement schedule and secure consistent funding for it to truly stay ahead of our Infrastructure needs instead of being reactionary.

There is a theory that by increasing growth you increase your tax base to pay for the short fall in public services that you provide, but that depends on the type of tax base you’re trying to attract. In most cases it covers the short fall, but eventually falls short covering the expansion in services. Then we as a county fall further behind with nothing left to do but keep raising taxes.

I believe Porter County is in a good position, but planning for the future with the current rate of inflation is going to cost more money and more resources to just maintain status que. Growth and Sound Infrastructure are one in the same. I believe a Sound Infrastructure should be first. Maintaining and rebuilding our current infrastructure. That would provide us the opportunity to grow. Lead us in the right direction of Responsible Growth.
