Katrina's Background After graduating from St. Joseph’s College with Cum Laude distinction, Katrina was a Deputy Sheriff in Cook County, Illinois, while attending DePaul University College of Law. After graduating from DePaul, she worked as an attorney for the second largest Sheriff’s Department in the country overseeing the implementation of such innovative programs as the Boot Camp and the Women’s Justice Division at the Cook County Jail.
Katrina is committed to her community. She works tirelessly on behalf of justice-involved Veterans as a volunteer member of the acclaimed Porter County Veterans Treatment Court for the last several years. For the past two years, she was one of two attorneys in a pilot program working to protect the community while addressing pretrial release of defendants. Outside of the law, Katrina has volunteered her time with the Portage YMCA, Portage Parks Foundation, Saint Paul Catholic Church and School, the St. Vincent DePaul Society, Girl Scouts, and Alice’s House.
About Katrina On a personal note, Katrina is part of a large, close knit family. She is the oldest of five. Her parents instilled in her the need for service in the community. Her Father, Thomas, served in the US Army, 24th Infantry Division on his pathway to citizenship. Her Mother, Mary, raised their five children while volunteering at their Grammar School and driving the children to sporting events, music lessons, Special Olympics, and Irish dancing classes. Katrina is married to Les Smock of Portage, Indiana. Les is an electrical engineer with LML Automated Systems, a Purdue University and Portage High School graduate.
Between them, Katrina and Les have six children: Kayla, Ian, Caroline, an incoming Junior at Purdue University; Ellen, an incoming Sophomore at Ball State University; and Twins Grace and Maggie, soon-to-be graduates of Valparaiso High School and attending Purdue and Columbia College, respectively, in the Fall.
